Choosing the Right Frame Material for Trade and New‑Build Projects

When you’re specifying windows and doors for commercial or new‑build work, the choice of frame material matters just as much as glass performance. It affects thermal performance, durability, maintenance and even how well a unit meets tender requirements.

Two of the most common choices are uPVC and aluminium. Both have a place in modern construction, but they suit different needs. This isn’t about fluff or sales pitch. It’s about knowing what each material genuinely brings to a build.

uPVC Frames: Practical, Efficient, and Cost‑Conscious

uPVC (unplasticised polyvinyl chloride) has become a mainstay in window manufacturing because it delivers solid thermal performance without a hefty price tag. The material itself doesn’t conduct heat easily, which means it naturally helps to resist heat loss through the frame. In practice, this makes it straightforward to achieve good U‑values in a double‑glazed unit without needing exotic glass options or extra insulation in the profile.

In commercial and new‑build work that isn’t pushing the architectural limits, uPVC offers some sensible advantages:

  • It’s typically less expensive upfront than aluminium, which helps keep early costs under control.
  • Its multi‑chambered design traps air and boosts insulation, so whole‑window U‑values are competitive without fuss.
  • It’s very low maintenance. A bit of warm water and detergent is usually all that’s needed to keep frames looking tidy.
  • It performs well in typical UK weather, resisting rot and moisture without special care.
  • It ticks the boxes for a wide range of applications where very slim frames aren’t a priority.

That said, uPVC isn’t perfect for every scenario. Frames tend to be chunkier, which means a bit more material around the glass. That’s fine for lots of work, but it isn’t always the look specifiers want for larger commercial façades.

Aluminium Frames: Slim, Strong and Built to Last

Aluminium frames have become a strong choice where a more refined aesthetic or larger glazed areas are required. The metal’s strength means frames can be much slimmer while still supporting significant glass loads important when a design calls for expansive views or floor‑to‑ceiling glazing.

Modern aluminium glazing systems also incorporate thermal breaks sections of non‑conductive material within the frame that reduce heat transfer. These breaks bring the material’s thermal performance up to very respectable levels that can sit close to uPVC once glazing is factored in.

The reasons many specifiers favour aluminium in commercial work include:

  • Its long life expectancy. High‑quality aluminium frames can last 40 years or more with minimal degradation.
  • The strength‑to‑weight ratio supports larger and more ambitious glazing designs.
  • You get slimmer profiles and larger glass areas, which can help let daylight deep into big spaces.
  • There’s often a wider colour range and finish choices than standard uPVC, which helps architects maintain design intent.
  • Low maintenance is part of the deal too. With quality powder coating, aluminium doesn’t rust or need repainting as often as some other choices.

Aluminium tends to cost more upfront, but its longevity and design flexibility make it a sensible choice where performance and aesthetic priorities are high.

How the Two Compare in Real Terms

It’s worth putting the two side by side in terms you’ll recognise on site:

Thermal performance: Both materials can deliver good U‑values when combined with quality double glazing, but uPVC naturally insulates better because the material itself doesn’t conduct heat. Aluminium with thermal breaks closes most of that gap, though there’s still often a slight edge to uPVC if all else is equal.

Structure and size: Aluminium is structurally stronger, so it suits big spans or where sight-lines matter. uPVC is fine for standard commercial windows and smaller apertures, but its thicker frames are more noticeable.

Durability and lifespan: Aluminium generally outlasts uPVC in tough conditions, resisting warping and corrosion over decades. uPVC is durable too, but most expect around 20-30 years before replacement is on the cards.

Maintenance: Both are low maintenance. uPVC needs only simple cleaning. Aluminium also needs minimal care, though checking fixings and seals occasionally is sensible on large installations.

Cost: uPVC usually costs less to buy and fabricate. Aluminium can be 20 to 40 per cent more expensive, but that depends on the system, finish and quantities involved.

Choosing What’s Right for Your Project

There’s no single answer that fits all commercial or new‑build jobs. What matters most are the project priorities:

  • If thermal performance and budget control are top of the list and design demands aren’t extreme, uPVC is worth strong consideration.
  • If frame strength, larger glazed areas or slim lines are essential, aluminium starts to make more sense.
  • If a long life with minimal tightening or cosmetic refreshes matters, aluminium often justifies its premium.

For many projects, the final choice comes down to balancing performance data with the architectural intent and client expectations. Good suppliers help you match system details to performance targets early in the specification process so that assumptions on paper translate into reality on site.
